1. What gh aw is
Section titled “1. What gh aw is”GitHub Agentic Workflows (gh-aw) is a GitHub CLI extension, currently Public
Preview, built by GitHub Next + Microsoft Research. It lets you define AI-powered
repository automation as Markdown files with YAML frontmatter in
.github/workflows/*.md, and compiles each into a hardened .lock.yml GitHub Actions
workflow that Actions actually executes.
The stated division of labour: use plain GitHub Actions for deterministic work (builds, tests, lint, deploy); use an agentic workflow for work needing reasoning or interpretation (triage, CI investigation, doc updates, review, reporting).
Engines: GitHub Copilot (default), Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, Google Gemini, Pi. Plus importable third-party engine definitions (OpenCode, Cursor, Kiro, Aider, Crush) that are explicitly unsupported samples.

- Markdown body = agent instructions. Editable directly on GitHub, no recompile needed. This is a genuinely useful property: non-engineers can tune agent behaviour through the GitHub web editor without touching CI.

carries a metadata header with frontmatter_hash, body_hash, compiler_version,
strict, agent_id, engine versions, plus a full manifest of pinned action SHAs and

The safety / permission model
Section titled “The safety / permission model”This is the part that matters most for a regulated enterprise like Patterson.
- Read-only agent job. The main agent job never gets
issues: write,pull-requests: write, orcontents: write. Writes are impossible from the agent. - Safe outputs. All writes are declared in
safe-outputs:and executed by a separate, scoped job after validation. Categories: content operations (issues, discussions, comments, PRs, reviews), management (labels, milestones, projects, releases, uploads), automation (workflow dispatch, code scanning, checks, agent assignment), and runtime (custom jobs, scripts, global config). Rules: prefer the most specific built-in; scope mutations tightly; always restrictallowed-filesfor PR/branch mutation. - Sandbox + network firewall. The agent runs in a container behind the Agent
Workflow Firewall (AWF); network is deny-by-default with an
allowed:list. Opting out broadens access explicitly. - Engine credential isolation. An API proxy keeps the model API key out of the agent sandbox entirely.
- Integrity filtering on untrusted GitHub content, and

Plus Dependabot is already bumping github/gh-aw-actions/setup in a ci-actions group
(commit b107aef). So the toolchain is live, not theoretical.

infrastructure, and it gives Patterson a governed internal catalog with pinned
provenance. The shared-fragment mechanism (imports: [shared/patterson-brand-voice.md])
is the key: brand voice, compliance language, and security boilerplate get authored
once and imported by every workflow — solving the exact copy-paste-duplication
problem that currently plagues patterson-design-plugins.
Phase 4 — wire gh-aw into the agent platform itself

.github/mcp.jsonwith thegh aw mcp-serverdeclaration in every Patterson repo (already prototyped inpatterson-skills), so Claude Code and Copilot can compile, audit, and inspect workflows as tools. - Promote
agentic-workflow-designer(Daniel’s interview skill) into the Patterson plugin marketplace as a first-class skill — it is the on-ramp that lets non-specialists author compliant workflows. - Add a

Relationship to the dual-manifest pattern
Section titled “Relationship to the dual-manifest pattern”gh aw is engine-agnostic by design — the same .md workflow runs on Copilot or
Claude by changing one frontmatter line. That is the same architectural principle as
the dual-manifest pattern, applied to CI instead of packaging. Patterson should treat
them as two halves of one strategy:
- Dual manifest → the same skills/agents reachable from both Claude Code and Copilot on the developer’s machine.
- gh aw → the same agent instructions runnable under either engine in CI.
Together they mean Patterson never has to bet on a single vendor’s harness.
Risks to flag
Section titled “Risks to flag”- gh-aw is Public Preview. Schema has already moved (
schema_version: v4, compiler v0.81.6). Pin versions; expect codemods on upgrade. - Cost is real and unbounded without
max-ai-credits. Installcost-trackerbefore scaling past a handful of repos. - Prompt injection through issue/PR content is the primary threat. The sanitized-context
- integrity-filtering + threat-detection stack must be enabled, not assumed.
.lock.ymlfiles are large generated artifacts committed to the repo. Reviewers must be told not to review them line-by-line and never to hand-edit them.
